Saul Alpiner was born in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1927. After serving in the US army (1945-47), Saul attended and graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in broadcasting. He moved to New York City and got a job as a radio broadcaster at WHLI in Hempstead, NY. He married Carol Kantrowitz in 1956, and started working at RCA Records as an account manager.
