She intends to commit suicide as an act of protest. Yet she is not courageous enough to taste the bitterness of death. The twist to the story is when QIAO ER swallows a piece of Chinese New Year cake, she is choked to death.

In order to win the opportunity of rebirth, she has to do good. KE ER faces the crisis of poverty after her sister's death. She is nearly homeless for she has not a dime to pay the rent. QIAO ER is like an ant on the boiling pan since now she is a ghost, she cannot lend a helping hand.
